Question: What do BC and AD mean?

The idea to count years from the birth of Jesus Christ was first proposed in the year 525 by Dionysius Exiguus, a Christian monk. AD stands for Anno Domini, Latin for “in the year of the Lord”, while BC stands for “before Christ”.

What does BC AD and CE mean?

In recent years, a persistent criticism has been leveled against the use of the BCE/CE system (Before the Common or Current Era/Common or Current Era), rather than BC/AD (Before Christ/Anno Domini or Year of Our Lord), in dating historical events.

Are we in the Common Era?

Common Era (CE; Latin: aera vulgaris) is a method used to identify a year. CE is an alternative to the AD, system used by Christians but the numbers are the same: this year is 2021 CE or equally AD 2021 (but usually we just say this year is 2021).
