How does a GFCI work on a two wire system?
A GFCI protection device operates on the principle of monitoring the current imbalance between the ungrounded (hot) and grounded (neutral) conductors. In a typical 2-wire circuit, the current in amperes returning to the power supply will be the same as the current leaving the power supply (except for small leakage).
Can a GFCI be split Wired?
Split receptacles are not available as GFCI type.
Will a GFCI work without a ground wire?
A GFCI does not need a ground wire in order to trip properly. A GFCI simply trips when a fault is detected on the neutral wire. An ungrounded outlet will not trip using your tester.
Can you switch one side of a GFCI outlet?
No. GFCIs receptacles cannot be switched, nor can they be split. Best bet is to use a GFCI breaker in the panel, then you can use regular receptacles that you can split and switch, and everything will be protected.
Are red wires positive or negative?

Can a light be on a GFCI circuit?

Notice, GFCI protection is only required for receptacles. Whereas AFCI protection, is required for all outlets in the mentioned areas. So while the light switch doesnt have to be GFCI protected, it does have to be AFCI protected.
