A transformer system includes a termination constructed to mechanically couple to a customer electrical line and to electrically couple the transformer to the customer electrical line. A termination support may be coupled to the termination.
For small control transformers, there will be X1 and X2 terminals only where X1 is the power side and X2 the grounding and a side of the low voltage. X2 is terminated to the neutral side of the control circuit and is also used for grounding safety.

Its acceptable to leave wire in the walls. The only thing you need to do is leave the ends exposed in boxes and wire nut and tape the to legs together. That will indicate to an electrician whats going on, and if someone does try to tie into them in the future it will just pop the breaker.

A relatively safe way to test transformers is to hook up a small AC voltage (1-5VAC) and measure the voltages across the other windings. The primarys wire is thinner and as W5VO says has a higher resistance.
If the Transformer value is within the measurement range, the multimeter will display the Transformer value. displayed multimeter value is between 300 to 700, this side is primary. displayed multimeter value is between 2 to 3, this side is secondary.
