Question: When did cufflinks start to have a toggle back?

Cufflinks are tools for fastening shirt cuffs closed. Theyre an alternative to the buttons that are commonly sewn onto shirt cuffs. They usually offer a little more contrast than a button, and are considered a more ornamental option, but theyre not inherently more or less formal.

Dating back to the seventeenth century, cufflinks came about when men wanted something more elegant for their shirts than ribbons or ties to hold together their cuffs. Men began using small chains that were fastened to the end of a gold or silver button and fed through the holes of the cuff to keep them together.

Among items within an estate, you may inherit one or several sets of cufflinks. Cufflinks may not be the most fashionable collectors item these days, but they can still be worth a nice amount, especially if they are gold or silver.

Why do men use cufflinks?

First and foremost, cufflinks are used to hold shirt cuffs together. Its always a good idea to keep shirt cuffs neat and tidy, and this is even more important when the said formal occasion involves food; a shirt sleeve dipped in tomato soup isnt quite as classy as you might have once imagined.
