For the bobber, a smaller one is more sensitive and offers less resistance to the fish so it can eat your bait easily. Finally, a short distance between the bobber and the hook (1 to 2 feet, normally) gets your worm in front of many fish yet keeps your hook from snagging the bottom.
How far should weight and bobber be from hook?
Step 2: Attach 1 or 2 sinkers, 6 to 12 inches above the hook. This weight will keep your bait or lure down in the water and will help swing it away from shore. Step 3: Clip a bobber on the line. A bobber lets you know when fish are biting, because it moves up and down in the water as fish nibble at the bait.
How far should the hook be away from the weight?
Depending on the depth, the distance from the hook to the weight needs to be adjusted. For shallower water, it is recommended to place your hook three to six inches above the weight. For deeper water, the hook can be adjusted to nine inches from the weight to no more than a foot and a half because of the leverage.
How far should split shot be from hook?
about 1 to 2 feet Apply the shot about 1 to 2 feet up the line from the hook. Put on just enough weight to get your offering to the bottom or close to it in a slow decent. As a rule of thumb I put on enough weight to get my bait to the bottom in 30 seconds. If it does not get there in that time frame add another split shot.
Where should your hook be placed?
When a fish strikes, snap the rod up over your shoulder or off to one side (sometimes called a side set). If doing the latter, you can twist at the waist to increase the power of your hookset. Before setting the hook it is critical to reel in slack line and point the rod towards the fish before snapping it back.
Does split shot weaken line?
The shot should not be mashed down onto the line.. Because it causes line damage, and its too hard to get it back off. All it takes is enough pressure to close the crack . . . and then a little more. With most split shot, it only takes a small amount of pressure to tighten the shot to your line.
Can you put split shot on braid?
Re: Where to put the split shot? I do mine to the braid just to not compromise the strength of the leader. When you take a splitshot off the line that was pinched in it usually looks pretty janky. Keep yer stick on the ice!
How do you keep a split shot from slipping?
Most anglers try to avoid this by tying a triple surgeons or blood knot above their tandem nymph rig, and attach the split-shot above that. The knot keeps the split-shot from sliding down to the flies during fly casting, and it only has to be snugly secured, which limits the chances of it damaging the tippet.
