(MoneyWatch) Asking the boss out on Valentines -- or any other -- day, is a bad idea, but lot of people do it anyway, according to a new survey on office dating. Job-search site CareerBuilder found that nearly 40 percent of U.S. employees have dated someone they worked with.
How many people date their boss?
While a majority (53 percent) of those surveyed reported dating a co-worker at their level, the study revealed 27 percent of workers are dating a superior. Comparatively, 20 percent are dating someone of a lower ranking.
Are employees allowed to date managers?
Can you date your boss legally? There is no law against dating ones boss. But many companies have policies in place that restrict bosses and managers from dating subordinate employees. These policies are in place to prevent an employee from being pressured into a relationship.
Is it OK to date someone from work?
Love can be complicated. But mixing love and work is even more so, because it involves your co-workers, your boss and your career. In fact, when it comes to love at work, most dating experts are clear about what they recommend: Dont do it. But, of course, people ignore relationship advice all the time.

Just consider this: 22 percent of US married couples in the U.S. met at work. That means theres either an incredibly high conversion rate among those employees who say theyre open to romances or—more likely—a whole lot of employees are more open to office romance than they think (or will admit to).
